Growing up, Molly Schwartz didn’t have a lot of exposure to art outside of basic childhood coloring books. Art History 101 in college introduced her to the massive world of art—one full of different styles and masters—a fun and magical world.

In 2015, she began working with shattered glass, both tempered and annealed, to create sculptural pieces. Something about glass enticed Molly; taking what people typically discarded and transforming it into something beautiful.

Washington based glass artist, Molly Schwartz, creates stunning mixed media pieces of paints, pigment, and shattered glass. One can't help but be seduced by the reflective light, dimension, and color in her work.

SEATTLE — Molly Schwartz's artistic process involves hitting glass with a hammer, and dangerous as that might sound, the result is pretty striking.

Schwartz paints glass, attaches it to a wood board with resin, then shatters the glass and pours paint until she's satisfied with the outcome. The results are pieces with amazing depth and color. Although Schwartz sketches out her initial ideas, she says the outcomes are always unpredictable. Schwartz's pieces are currently on display at Schoener Home Furnishings in Bellevue.

Seattle Refined: How long have you been creating? Do you work with other mediums? I’ve always loved to draw and design, but I didn’t start working with glass art and getting into it seriously until about 2-3 years ago. I currently work with both tempered glass and annealed glass. I also use acrylic paint and resin. Resin is especially beautiful to work with, and I love the challenge it can present! Sometimes I will use gold leaf, glitter, wood or metal. I’m always trying to see what else I can add into my work to shake things up.
